A late 19th century Chinese porcelain plate in the rose medallion pattern, decorated in famille rose enamels across four panels with figures, flowers, birds and insects, c.1880.

Description

The decoration is divided into four alternating panels. Two panels depict figures in conversation - a subject typical of the rose medallion tradition, where domestic and courtly scenes are rendered in careful detail. The remaining two panels carry flowers, birds and insects against a ground of foliage. The central medallion features a rose-form flower with a bird, the element from which the pattern takes its name. The enamels are famille rose - the palette characterised by its use of pink derived from colloidal gold, introduced to Chinese porcelain in the early 18th century and widely used for export wares throughout the 19th. The foot rim is unglazed with kiln frit, consistent with period production. No marks to the reverse.

Condition

Normal period wear with small losses to the enamels in places. Small section of fritting to the rim with glazed-over chips from firing - consistent with the piece's age and original kiln production rather than subsequent damage.
