A Victorian vulcanite mourning necklace of graduated oval links, with a black enamelled metal spring hook and 47.5cm in length.

Description

The necklace is formed from substantial oval links, each with two openings and joined to the next. The largest measures 28mm x 19.5mm. The original joining openings are visible on the links, a feature of this construction; some joins have shifted slightly with age. The links are mostly matt, with satin edges, and fasten with a black enamelled metal spring hook.

Vulcanite, a hardened rubber, could be moulded into bold black forms and became a popular material for Victorian mourning jewellery. This necklace retains much of its black colour, with hints of green beginning to show in places, a characteristic change in aged vulcanite. It dates to around 1880.

Condition

Minor wear consistent with age. The enamel on the spring hook is worn. Joining openings are evident on some links, and some joins have shifted slightly over time. Hints of green are visible in the otherwise black vulcanite.
