A antique Coalport demi-tasse cup and saucer in the Japanese Grove pattern, c.1890. Finely potted, richly gilded, and in very good condition for age - a lovely piece for any collection of Victorian porcelain or Japonisme decorative arts.

Description

The Japanese Grove pattern reflects the Japonisme movement that swept European decorative arts from the 1870s onwards - cobalt blue birds in flight among bamboo, set against a rich gilt ground. The interior of the cup is fully gilded, lending a sense of quiet opulence. Coalport - one of England's most accomplished porcelain manufacturers - produced some of the finest interpretations of this style, and demi-tasse sets of this quality and pattern are increasingly sought after by collectors of Victorian ceramics and Orientalist decorative arts alike.

Both pieces are formed in fine, thin-walled china with an elegant fluted body, a hallmark of Coalport's refined production during the late Victorian period. Coalport green printed marks to the underside confirm the dating to c.1890.

Condition

Both pieces very good for period. Some minor crazing to the underside of the saucer. A little gilt wear to the well where the cup has rested, and slight wear to the gilt rim - consistent with age and use. Overall a pleasing and presentable example.
