Description

A wonderful early 20th century Derbyshire blue john veined box.  It uses carved stone panels to form the body with green hardstone and the wonderful veins of blue john running through the pieces.  It has a metal mount to the lid and opening and opens to reveal a fabric lined interior.  Where the veins of blue john run through the body you can really see into the crystal and beneath the surface.  At the size and with the fabric lining it was probably intended as a small jewellery box.  It's a lovely piece to look at with so much interest in the various stone and crystal formations.

There are no makers marks and it is likely Edwardian in period from the style and mount.  It is of course a particularly rare as well as beautiful piece.

Condition

No significant faults.  Some of the natural fissures in the veins have been filled with green paint as you see in the images.  Fabric interior has gone stiff in parts and is aged as expected. Wear and verdigris to the metal work.  The odd very tiny nick to the edges
