Summary

An antique Dutch scent bottle with a thick bevelled crystal body and a hinged 14ct gold cap, dating to the third quarter of the 19th century, with its original glass stopper and silk-lined case.

Description

The crystal is cut with bevels to the edges and flat panels to the sides - substantial in the hand, the kind of weight that signals quality. The hinged gold cap closes on a friction fit that still works cleanly. To the rim beneath the cap, a mark - indistinct but present, to the back of the cap near the hinge, an oak leaf, the Dutch assay mark used to indicate gold of 14 carat or above. The gold tests as 14ct minimum. The original small glass stopper is present. From the design and the case, the piece dates to the third quarter of the 19th century - c.1860-1875. It comes with its original silk-lined case, shown in the images.

Condition

Very good for type and period. Very slight knocks to the gold, nothing of significance. Slight wear to the crystal. The case is in poor condition with significant wear and losses, and is in two parts.
