An early Victorian 9ct rose gold and silver harlequin marquise ring with multi-coloured paste stones and bifurcated shoulders, dating to the mid-19th century.

Description

The band is rose gold with decorative bifurcated shoulders - a form typical of the mid 19th century, while the head is set in silver, marked SIL.SET to the underside. The stones are paste, multi-coloured in the harlequin tradition, and arranged in a marquise cluster that catches the light across the full spread of the head. Inside the band an old hallmark is partially rubbed and now reads only ct gold; the gold tests as 9 carat. The ring is approximately 180 years old and carries the character of that age honestly.

Condition

Wear to the mount consistent with age and use. Some stones are glued in place. One pink and one blue stone appear to be replacements, as does the green stone. The overall effect remains attractive and the piece wears well despite its history.
