Description

A 19th century small swirl glass bowl, by the French glass house Clichy. Classic form for this factory with blue and white canes and clear between, the swirls on this example are quite tight and more densely packed than often seen. The light aqua blue gives a bright freshness to the design as opposed to the darker blues they produced and it would date around 1870. At this size it was likely for sugar or preserves as an individual serving piece, but would also suit small bonbons, nuts etc. The pontil scar has been ground and polished out. As expected for Clichy it is made from glass canes (in a similar way to paperweights) rather than flat glass strips, the texture of these can be felt to the inside of the bowl. Unmarked as expected, but a known Clichy design.

Condition

Very good order, wear to the foot as expected. A very good example for the collector.
