Antique George III Georgian English Lead Glass Opaque Twist Wine Goblet (3099)
Description
A mid 18th century Georgian wine goblet with an opaque twist stem. It dates around 1765 and has a double series stem with central spiral gauze and a pair of outer tapes. The form of the glass copies the wine glasses of the period except this goblet is significantly scaled up in capacity and bowl size. The bowl is of ogee shape and the foot is conical with the pontil scar being left rough. The glass is English lead type.
When this item was made glasses and wine were very expensive and only affordable by the rich. Glasses typically had very small capacities if they were used for wine or strong drinks due to a number of reasons. Drinking was often done as toasts so a small capacity worked well for this especially with servants to refill the glasses. The high cost of fine wine and other drinks also suited small capacity glasses. Goblets such as this were made but are scarce and were make in far fewer numbers and were extravagant pieces. The capacity of this goblet is fairly comparable with a modern wine glass.
Condition
There are some captive air bubbles in the bowl, quite common for this period. There is some minor fritting around the edge of the foot rim.
