Description

A fine Victorian majolica dish by George Jones, designed with bold leaf decoration and a fox cleverly worked into the form.

The bowl is decorated with raised green leaves over a soft pink to mauve ground, while the fox’s head appears over the rim in a rich treacle glaze. Its paws rest on the upper edge, and the tail curls around the underside before just appearing again over the opposite side of the dish. The underside is finished in a striking green and iridescent tortoiseshell-style glaze, adding interest even when viewed from below or at an angle.

The dish was designed as a serving piece, often associated with strawberries or fruit, though it would also display beautifully as a cabinet piece or centrepiece. The Victorian registration lozenge to the underside dates the design to 1869. The George Jones mark is not visible, possibly concealed by the thick glaze, but the design is referenced and the registration lozenge identifies it as a George Jones design.

George Jones majolica is admired for its inventive naturalistic forms, lively animal modelling and richly coloured glazes. This fox dish is a charming example, balancing useful tableware with the humour and theatricality that make Victorian majolica so collectable.

Condition

Very good antique condition for period. Normal age-related crazing. Minor wear to the yellow rim. Minor glaze flaws from firing, including the odd glaze pop and kiln frit as expected. Some glaze misses to the foot.
