A rare and beautifully glazed art pottery vase by Gustave Asch, dating to circa 1900. Decorated with gilt berries and leaves against a richly mottled sea green faience glaze, this slender vase is a fine example of French art pottery at the turn of the century.

Description

Of elegant slender form and wholly characteristic of Asch's production at the turn of the century, this vase is covered in a thickly applied sea green faience glaze of exceptional depth and texture. The surface has a distinctive mottled quality, not unlike shagreen, with subtle sag lines from the firing process that speak to the hand-crafted nature of the piece. Overlaid decoration of gilt berries and leaves with red details adds warmth and refinement to the cool ground.

The base bears the impressed axe pictorial mark associated with Gustave Asch, together with a hand painted Sevres-style mark. Gustave Asch pieces are increasingly difficult to acquire, and this particular sea green glaze colour is now rarely encountered - making this an especially desirable addition to any collection of French art pottery.

Condition

Very good condition with minor wear commensurate with age. A small number of glaze pops from firing and some run lines in the glaze resulting from the thick application. Some crazing present, consistent with the faience body and period of manufacture.
