Description

The Arts and Crafts movement placed the hand of the maker at the centre of its aesthetic, and this box demonstrates that principle throughout - hand-beaten copper, hand formed hinges, hand set rivets, the surface carrying the marks of the tools that shaped it.

The lid is decorated with an ivy leaf design in the Art Nouveau manner, the organic trailing form well suited to the material and the period. At 30cm x 14.5cm it is the size of a large glove box, though it was most likely intended as a general purpose table or desk box. The copper has developed a rich old patina over its working life, with some verdigris in the recesses; the interior shows traces of old polish. There are no maker's details, which is typical for workshop pieces of this type. The piece dates to around 1900, at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain.
