Antique Indian Hindu Heavy Brass Lota Vessel / Vase with Ganesha & Owls (Code 2697)
A 19th century Indian Hindu lota vase. It is of traditional shape with flared rim and rounded base. It is of heavy gauge brass and sits quite firmly. There is a depiction of Ganesh to the main body and around the shoulders are owl like creatures with anthropomorphic faces. There is also a short inscription which appears to be in Hindi. Given the decoration this would had been a domestic item, not made for the export or tourist market.
The alloying of the brass wasn't perfect and as a result you can see patches of red copper in the surface which haven't mixed with the zinc effectively. This is typical of early provincial pieces.
Well used with small scratches all over the surface. Nicely polished. Patches of un-alloyed copper in the surface. An indent near the base. Normal age related wear.
