Antique Islamic Script Enamel over Copper Persian Damascus Pharmacy Jar (Code 2453)
A very interesting enamel over copper jar with Islamic script in shaped panels. Hand cut dovetailed base of convex form and rolled over rim. Quite heavy copper walls and it is of course hand made. The design is suggestive of Persian Damascus origin (Syria) and mid 19th century or earlier period. It is considered that these items were used as pharmacy jars and there is an indent below the rim to allow a cord to be tied to hold a paper/skin covering in place. There are of course no makers marks to the base. A similar item can be found in the Science Museum (Kensington, London) Ethnography & Folk Medicine collection, catalogue reference A121028
Losses to the enamel. Dents and knocks, however at least some of this it likely from the artisan made nature. Pool of enamel to interior.
