Antique Japanese Satsuma Moriage Vase Pair, Very Large Late Meiji, Prunus Blossom & Birds (Code 2685)
Description
A pair of large and impressive Japanese pottery vases dating to the late Meiji period. They are decorated in the moriage technique which uses clay slip to create the deign. These are particularly fine examples of this technique with hand painted enamel further enhancing the decoration. This form became popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century and is more commonly found adding detail to Satsuma ware with Samurai and dragons.
Although looking quite different to traditional Satsuma ware they retain the crazing to the cream clay. The decoration is also unmistakably Japanese with prunus blossom, birds and landscape scenes. Along with being large they are also thickly hand potted and are very substantial weighing in at over 6kg the pair, and will certainly make an impact in even a larger room.
Condition
Intentional crazing as expected for Satsuma. Some of the crazing has developed into fine hairlines to the rims, but nothing which spoils them in any way. Minor wear with the odd small loss of moriage and enamel.
