Description

An early 20th century Japanese Sumida ware dish with three applied figures of children. This art pottery was produced for export at the end of the 19th century and through the post war period and has a distinctive style. This example has three figures hanging over the bowl. The bowl walls are glazed in a drip style multi colour flambe with the interior a mottled green. The lower part is painted red, typical of Sumida ware. Originally named after the river where such items were first produced these items are great fun to hunt down and collect with many forms available still at reasonable prices.
