Antique Machin & Potts Robert Burns Moulded Stoneware Jug with Tam O'Shanter (Code 2438)
A 19th century moulded stoneware jug by Machin & Potts. This is the Robert Burns jug with an applied clay portrait of the poet (titled Burns) in white. The ground is an oatmeal colour and the walls are relatively fine for this period.
The mask head to the spout is Tam O'Shanter. The two sides of the jug depict scenes from the Marsh & Miller 1830 edition of the book illustrated by Thomas Landseer. The hand holding the tail forming the handle is inspired from an illustration in the same book. To the base is a clay pad mark with details of the item and the date of 1834 making this jug a William IV example, just pre-dating the Victorian.
A nice looking moulded jug and quite a scarce find these days.
Very good for period. Some kiln dust in the glaze and the mould lines are quite prominent.
