Antique Persian Qajar Carved Ground Vase in Cobalt Blue with Polychrome Birds (Code 2602)
An late 19th / early 20th century Persian vase in the Qajar style. It has interesting 3D decoration with the ground being hand carved back to leave the polychrome decorated areas proud of the surface by about 1.5mm. This construction gives it a very tactile feel, and it is as nice to hold as it is to look upon. It was fired in an uncontrolled kiln as expected for this region leading to the interesting formations of the glaze with thick accumulations in places. The ground colour is a cobalt blue with a very high gloss in the thicker areas attested to by the large white reflections seen in the images.
Some damage to the rim with crude repair. The uncontrolled firing leads to lots of inconsistencies in the glaze, this is expected of these items. There is a glaze loss near the foot. Some craze lines in the base.
