Description

A beautiful Regency period English porcelain cabinet plate, dating circa 1820.

The plate is adorned with softly painted floral sprays, each arranged with studied elegance against a generous white ground - a composition in keeping with the refined taste of early 19th century English porcelain. A fine gilt line set just within the rim, together with a gilt edge, completes the decoration with quiet distinction.

Although the plate is unmarked, it is very much in the manner of Swansea porcelain and is most likely to have originated from that factory. The reverse carries a faint impressed mark, though it is illegible. When held to the light, the porcelain body reveals a characteristic greenish translucency - a quality associated with Swansea wares.

The delicate botanical painting reflects the Regency passion for naturalistic ornament and refined tableware, where individually painted floral sprays replaced the heavier, more formal decoration of earlier periods.

Condition

Good antique condition overall. Several small, tight firing or stress hairlines extend from the rim, consistent with internal body stresses rather than impact damage - a characteristic noted in Swansea porcelain. There is overall crazing, principally across the centre of the plate, together with some brown underglaze spots to the reverse.
