Antique Portuguese Silver Small Gallery Tray with Sardine & Lisbon Mark c1830 (Code 2256)
Description
A rare early 19th century Portuguese solid silver small galleried tray. The center is etched with a sardine, and this item may had been intended for serving them at a fine dinner. Today of course it would also make a great pen tray or a small dressing table tray. The feet are cast with stylised shells and waves emphasising the marine connection. The pierced work gallery is quite heavily constructed and sweeps outwards.
The top is struck with the Lisbon control mark for silver, and there is a zigzag wriggle mark to the underside used for the original assay testing.
Condition
One foot has a stress crack due to a flaw in the original casting shown in close up. This is stable and will be fine as long as it is not roughly handles. Otherwise it appears very good for the period with typical light wear.
