Summary

A charming and collectible piece of early 20th-century advertising ware, made by Royal Doulton for Wright's Coal Tar Soap. Decorated in the majolica style with a naturalistic dragonfly subject, this is a fine example of the commercial commissions that Doulton undertook during their most prolific period.

Description

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Royal Doulton produced a range of advertising wares for prominent commercial clients - a practice that sat alongside their celebrated art pottery output. Wright's Coal Tar Soap, one of Britain's best known household brands of the era, commissioned Doulton to produce these distinctive soap dishes, which were used both as functional retail pieces and as promotional gifts. The advertising details are impressed to the underside.

This example is decorated in the majolica tradition, with richly coloured glazes depicting a dragonfly perched at the edge of a pond. The central well is glazed in a deep, lustrous cobalt blue - a colour Doulton used to striking effect across many of their decorative lines of this period. The combination of naturalistic imagery and bold colour is very much in keeping with the Arts and Crafts-influenced aesthetic that was fashionable at the turn of the century.

Condition

Some light surface scratches to the blue central area, consistent with use as a trinket or coin dish over the years. Otherwise in very good order for its age, with the glaze colours remaining vivid and the impressed advertising marks to the base clear and legible.
