Antique Royal Worcester Cabinet Plate - Hand Painted Merlin Bird - William Powell - 1912 - 3237
Summary
A small early 20th century Royal Worcester china plate, hand painted with a Merlin bird of prey perched on a fir tree branch, with a gilt rim.
Description
The plate is painted by William Powell, one of Royal Worcester's most celebrated bird artists, whose naturalistic style brought an unusual stillness to his subjects. The Merlin - Britain's smallest falcon - is rendered with careful attention to plumage, set against a softly washed background of fir branches. Powell has signed the work 'W Powell' to the lower section of the painting.
To the reverse, the Royal Worcester puce stamp is present with a date code for 1912, and the word 'Merlin' is hand painted in identification of the bird.
Condition
All-over crazing, as is typical of pieces of this age. A couple of the craze lines can be felt by the fingernail and have darkened slightly. No chips, cracks or restoration noted.
