Description

An antique Russian silver hinged bangle, dating to the late 19th century.

The bangle is of hollow construction with a hinged form, sliding clasp and safety chain. It is decorated with turquoise cabochons to the front section, with niello decoration around the sides and back. The clasp tongue is marked with the St Petersburg town mark, 84 zolotnik silver mark for 875 grade silver, and the silversmith’s mark Aд. The silversmiths mark is repeated to the inside of the bangle.

The exterior decoration includes stylised Cyrillic lettering 'кавкаэт' (Kavkaz), meaning Caucasus, a region of Russia. The style and niello work suggest likely production in the Kubachi region, an area well known for traditional silverwork, niello decoration and Caucasian ornamental metalwork.

Russian niello work of this type was produced by engraving a design into the silver and filling the recessed areas with a dark metallic compound, creating strong contrast against the polished silver surface. Kubachi silverwork is particularly associated with dense ornamental decoration, inscriptions, scrolling motifs and finely worked niello surfaces.

This is a characterful handmade bangle with strong regional style, authentic Russian silver marks, turquoise cabochons and traditional Caucasian niello decoration.

Condition

Generally good antique condition with age related surface wear. There is some wear and loss to the niello inlay in places. Some of the turquoise has turned greener through natural handling and ageing. The hinge, sliding clasp and safety chain are present and working.
