A Victorian double ended scent bottle by Sampson Mordan, with a deep ruby red glass body and chased sterling silver caps. One end has a spring cap with a glass seal for smelling salts; the other a screw cap with cork stopper for perfume. 

Description

A double ended scent bottle of the Victorian period by Sampson Mordan & Co, one of the foremost makers of silver novelties and accessories in 19th century London. The body is in deep ruby red glass of good colour and weight. The two sterling silver caps are chased with decorative detail and differ in function: one end opens with a spring cap retained by a glass seal, intended for smelling salts, while the other has a screw cap with cork stopper for liquid perfume. Both caps carry full London hallmarks with the date letter for 1879 and the maker's mark SM.

At 13cm in length and 124 grams, this is a notably large example. The majority of double ended bottles encountered are considerably smaller and lighter; the scale, weight and quality of this piece place it among the more impressive survivals of the type.

Condition

Minor surface wear to the silver caps consistent with age and use, but no significant faults. Beneath the glass seal of the spring cap there is some discolouration from liquid having entered this area at some point.
