An Edwardian sterling silver combination dip pen and pencil by Sampson Mordan & Co., with an engine turned barrel, vacant cartouche and retractable writing ends.

Description

The slender silver barrel is decorated with alternating bands of fine engine turning and small polished circles, with a plain cartouche left free of engraving. Both writing ends retract into the body, leaving a compact instrument measuring approximately 9.6cm when closed.

Sliding the collar in one direction reveals the dip pen, fitted with an Esterbrook gold coloured nib. The collar reaches a stop and locks into the body; a slight turn then allows a short wooden pencil to slide from the opposite end. The mechanism is working, although the action remains stiff.

The barrel carries London hallmarks for sterling silver with the date letter for 1902, together with the SM & Co. maker's mark and the fuller S. Mordan & Co. stamp.

Condition

In particularly good condition for its age. The extending action works correctly but remains stiff. There is some rubbing to the hallmarks from handling.
