An Edwardian antique sterling silver double-ended combination dip pen and pencil by Sampson Mordan & Co., with engine-turned barrel and blank cartouche, London hallmarked 1902.

Description

A good example of Sampson Mordan's ingenious double ended writing instruments. The barrel is engine turned, with a blank cartouche to one face. Sliding the collar one way reveals a dip pen fitted with an Esterbrook gold coloured nib; the collar then locks into the body at a stop point before a slight turn allows a pencil stub to slide from the opposite end. The action remains stiff, suggesting the piece has seen little use.

Hallmarks are struck to the barrel: a London assay mark with date letter for 1902, together with the SM & Co. maker's mark and the fuller S. Mordan & Co. stamp.

Condition

Particularly good for period. Action working correctly, though still stiff - consistent with light use. Some rubbing to the hallmarks from handling.
