Description

The Arabic Couple & Cat is perhaps Dunmore's most famous decorative subject - a scene depicting a seated Arabic couple with lamp and a cat perched on the edge of a brazier, rendered with the warmth and narrative charm that made Dunmore pieces so sought after during the Victorian period. The design is executed in a deep green majolica glaze with a beautiful petrol iridescence that shifts in the light, a quality characteristic of Dunmore's majolica production.

Dunmore Pottery was established on the estate of the Earl of Dunmore in Stirlingshire, Scotland, and operated from around 1860 to 1903. Under the direction of Peter Gardner, it became one of Scotland's most celebrated art potteries, known for its richly coloured glazes and distinctive decorative subjects. This piece is unmarked as was common for Dunmore during the Victorian period, but examples can be identified by their distinctive glaze palette and form. The rim is pierced with hanging holes for display with string or wire (factory original).

Condition

Good displayable condition for period. Some glaze scrapes and crazing. Minor firing flaws with some kiln grit and small shrinkage cracks through the decoration - consistent with the hand-production methods of the period and not unusual for Dunmore. Please refer to images for full presentation.
