An antique Scottish sterling silver and agate bracelet, circa 1870, with six carved agate panels and a padlock clasp with an agate front panel and chased silver reverse.

Description

The bracelet is constructed from six agate panels, each carved and set between decorative silver terminals. The agates vary slightly in tone, as is typical of hand-selected natural stone work from this period.

The clasp is formed as a padlock with a compression closure that remains fully working. The front carries an agate panel continuing the design of the bracelet; the reverse has chased silver detail. It is an unusually well considered piece of hardware for a bracelet of this type.

There are no hallmarks, which is normal for Scottish pebble jewellery of this period - the metal tests as sterling silver. The bracelet dates to around 1870, placing it in the height of the Victorian enthusiasm for Scottish Highland dress and accessories.

Condition

Very good for period with no significant faults. Minor wear commensurate with age. Hand-made, so minor production inconsistencies are inherent to the piece.
