Description

An antique Scottish sterling silver and banded agate bracelet dating to the Victorian period, circa 1870.

The bracelet is formed from six shaped agate panels, each individually mounted with engraved silver end fittings. The stones show naturally varied bands of orange, russet, cream, grey and brown.

Small articulated links join the panels, allowing the bracelet to flex around the wrist. The silver mounts are engraved with scrolling foliate decoration.  The clasp is formed as a padlock with a shaped agate panel to the front and chased decoration to the reverse. The fastening remains in good working order.

This type of jewellery is commonly known as Scottish pebble jewellery. It became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period, when polished agates and other native stones were mounted in silver for bracelets, brooches and related jewellery.

The bracelet is unmarked, which is usual for Scottish agate jewellery of this period, and the metal tests as sterling silver.

Condition

Very good antique condition with light wear consistent with age.

The agate panels are intact and securely mounted. The articulated links and padlock clasp remain in working order. Minor irregularities are present from the handmade construction.
