Antique Secessionist Boch Frères La Louvière Art Deco Bronze Mounted Vase - 3197
Summary
An early 20th century Boch Frères La Louvière pottery vase with a dramatic flambe glaze running from deep cobalt at the base through amber and yellow to a turquoise-glazed interior, fitted with ormolu bronze mounts to the rim and foot.
Description
Boch Frères La Louvière, the Belgian ceramics house, produced technically accomplished flambe glazed wares in the Art Nouveau and Secessionist period. This vase is a good example - the glaze runs in vertical streaks of cobalt blue, sage green and amber yellow, the colours bleeding into one another in a way that resists easy description and rewards close inspection. The interior is glazed in a bright turquoise, visible at the open rim.
The ormolu bronze mounts - a beaded collar at the rim hung with cast laurel-and-pinecone swag garlands, and a matching foot ring - are characteristic of the French-influenced decorative treatment applied to prestige Belgian wares of this period. The Boch Frères mark to the base dates the piece to the 1920s.
Condition
Good for period. The bronze mounts show an aged patina consistent with age and use. Some crazing to the glaze, as is typical for flambe-glazed pottery of this era. A few minor surface scratches. No chips or repairs noted.
