Summary

An antique sterling silver combined vesta and sovereign case, hallmarked for Chester 1904 with the BPCD mark for Boots Pure Drug Company. The case has engine turned decoration, a suspension loop, striker to the underside of the vesta cap and a press-button opening sovereign section designed to hold full sized sovereigns.

Description

An antique sterling silver combined vesta and sovereign case, hallmarked for Chester 1904.

The case has a rectangular rounded form with engine-turned decoration to the front and back, along with a vacant circular cartouche to the front. One end hinges open for the vestas, with a striker panel to the underside of this end. The other section opens by pressing the button, revealing the sovereign holder inside. The sovereign compartment has a gilt wash interior and is designed to hold full sized sovereigns.

The case also has a suspension loop, allowing it to be attached to a chain or carried as an Albert chain accessory.

The hallmarks include the Chester assay mark, date letter for 1904, sterling lion passant and maker’s mark BPCD for Boots Pure Drug Company. Boots is best known as a chemist and pharmaceutical retailer, but around this period the company also retailed a range of personal, gift and dressing table goods, including silver mounted and silver items.

A well made and increasingly hard to obtain Edwardian silver accessory, combining two useful functions in one compact case.

Condition

Generally good antique condition. All hinges and catches are working well, including the press button opening to the sovereign section. There is age related surface wear, light scratches and some shallow indenting to the surface, most visible to the sides and back. The gilt wash to the sovereign section has light wear.
