A substantial Edwardian sterling silver double Albert watch chain dating to 1908, complete with twin dog clips, T-bar and two suspended 1910 silver coins. Traditionally worn with a waistcoat and pocket watch, Albert chains are now increasingly popular as short necklaces.

Description

This antique double Albert has two curb link sections meeting at the central fittings, with a dog clip at either end and a traditional T-bar suspended from the centre. The links measure approximately 6.75mm across and bear individual lion sterling marks. Both dog clips carry sponsor's marks, while the T-bar has a matching sponsor's mark. Its date letter corresponds to Glasgow 1908, although the Glasgow town mark itself is not present.

Two period coins have been pierced and suspended beside the T-bar. The first is a British 1910 sixpence featuring King Edward VII, struck in sterling silver at 0.925 fineness. The second is an Australian 1910 threepence, also bearing Edward VII on the obverse, with the early Commonwealth arms and the words THREEPENCE and ADVANCE AUSTRALIA on the reverse. The Australian threepence formed part of Australia's first Commonwealth silver coinage, introduced in 1910 and struck at the Royal Mint in London.

Originally, a double Albert would have been secured through a waistcoat buttonhole using the T-bar, with a pocket watch and accessories attached to the two clips. These chains have since found a second life as necklaces, valued for their substantial curb links, antique character and central T-bar detail. When the two dog clips are joined, this example forms a short necklace of approximately 39cm.

Condition

Good antique condition with normal age-related surface wear, marks and patination throughout. The coins show circulation wear from their original use and have been pierced for suspension. Please study the photographs for the overall presentation and condition.
