Description

This antique oval box is made in silver around a large natural moss agate cabochon mounted into the hinged lid. The broad, low cabochon displays extensive dendritic inclusions across a pale translucent ground, with dark blue grey and brown branching formations spreading through the stone.  At the size it may have been intended as a trinket box, a snuff box, or even for cosmetics.

These naturally occurring mineral inclusions within the chalcedony create the plant like patterns for which moss agate is named. The stone forms almost the entire lid, with a closely fitted mount around its edge.

The lid is hinged at the rear and closes by friction against the body of the box. The interior retains a gilt wash, now showing age related wear. There are no assay or maker's marks, and the silver tests as sterling.

The construction is neatly executed, with a concealed hinge line and closely fitted lid. The box could have served as a small trinket or snuff box.

Condition

Good antique condition with normal surface wear and fine marks to the silver from age and use.

The moss agate has a small natural flaw close to the rim which has resulted in a small area of loss from the edge of the stone. The cabochon remains secure in its setting, and the hinge and friction fit closure operate correctly.

The gilt washed interior shows age related wear.
