Antique Victorian 18ct Gold, Pearl & Black Onyx Mourning Brooch c.1870 (Code A1061)
Description
A fine antique Victorian period mourning brooch. It has a polished black onyx cabochon and seed pearls set into 18ct gold. To the centre is a starburst form with further seed pearls. Around the edge, some of the seed pearls are set with a black surround and there are decorative lugs around the edge of the brooch. It has a glass back and the original hair is in place. It is particularly finely woven as you may be able to see in the images. There are no marks but the gold tests as 18 carat. It also comes with a safety chain and pin.
This really is a lovely example and one of the very best we have seen in a long time and remarkably well preserved for the age.
It likely dates around 1870 making it 150 years old.
Measurements (Approx)
- Length: 45.25mm
- Height: 25.25mm
- Material : 18ct gold/black onyx / seed pearl
- Weight: 14.23 grams (before packing)
Condition: Remarkably good for age. Hinge and pin working fine, as is the safety chain. Very slight wear and some dust under the glass. We suspect one pearl may be a replacement as it is a slightly different colour to the rest.
