Description
A wonderful 19th century brooch featuring a micro mosaic panel of a colourful butterfly. The black onyx is set with tiny tiles in various colours and also sections of polished gold stone giving the glittery effect in the wings. It is set in an elaborate mount with scrolled detail and open work along with decorative claws. There appear to be no marks to the back, however the mount tests as 9 carat gold. It would date circa 1870 and is Italian in origin and was likely brought back from a grand tour. The brooch has a standard hinge and pin fixing and has the addition of a safety chain.
