Antique Victorian Cut Steel Brooch | Blue Glass Flower Centre | English/French | c.1840-1850 (A1167)
Summary
An unusual early Victorian cut steel brooch, dating to around 1840-1850. The brooch has a flower or starburst form, with faceted cut steel detail surrounding a moulded blue glass flower centre.
Description
A distinctive early Victorian cut steel brooch, combining dark faceted steel with a small blue glass flower centre.
The brooch is arranged in a flower or starburst form, with faceted round steel studs and elongated elliptical steel elements radiating from the centre. The cut steel has a dark silvery tone, giving the piece an attractive antique character and a subtle sparkle when it catches the light.
At the centre is a moulded blue glass flower, fixed with a small faceted steel stud. The blue glass appears original and gives the brooch a vivid point of colour, making it more unusual than a standard all-steel example.
The reverse has a brass backing plate, typical of the period, with a handmade hinge and long pin. The latch hook may be an old replacement. The piece could be English or French and dates to around the mid 19th century.
Cut steel jewellery was admired in the 18th and 19th centuries for its reflective quality, with individually faceted steel elements polished to glint in candlelight. This example has a particularly charming twist, pairing that traditional steelwork with a bright moulded glass flower.
Condition
Good antique condition for period, with no significant rusting of the steel. The blue glass centre is good, with mould lines visible. It has some movement due to loosening of the central stud, but is not in danger of coming off. Latch hook may be an old replacement.
