Description

A 9ct gold portrait brooch of the late Victorian or Edwardian period, set with a circular porcelain roundel carrying a hand painted bust portrait of a young woman in the style of a gypsy girl, possibly of Irish origin. The painting is executed with fine detail characteristic of the period's miniature portrait tradition.

The gold surround frame is stamped 9ct and carries the maker's mark W.G & S. This mark likely for William Griffiths & Sons of Birmingham, a maker active during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, though this attribution is not confirmed.
