Description
The brooch is formed around a central star flanked by triangles on either side - an interesting geometric arrangement for mid Victorian jewellery. The main stones are table cut garnets, a cutting style that predates the brilliant cut and gives the piece a flat, glassy face that catches light differently from later work.
There are no hallmarks. The pin tests as gold; the hook and backing are either a very low carat that won't test reliably, or a high zinc alloy or similar. The fastening is a simple J hook and pin.
Garnet is the birthstone for January.
Condition
Very good for period with minor wear. Stones all appear perfect to the naked eye; some minor wear visible under 10x magnification, as expected for age. Cleaned and ready to wear.
