Description

An interesting mid Victorian period box.  From the design it was probably intended for cigars and it has an interior with sections and moveable dividers.  The box is in coromandel over mahogany and has high quality brass fittings including an inset folding handle for transportation.  The edges of the flaps and the base of the box are black lacquered.  The central lid functions to hold the two outer flaps in place when locked (due to movement in the wood the right flap can now be opened with the main lid in place).  
 
The locking mechanism is unusual, it functions as a regular lock.  However upon unlocking the centre lock spigot must be moved to the right side of the escuchion to allow the lid to open.  The interior is lined with mahogany and there are mohangy pads to the underside of the lids. It would date circa 1860 and is a very nicely made example.  It comes with key. 
 

Condition

Very good for period.  Minor wear.  Some patina to the brass work.  Lock working.  Right hand flap can still be opened when box is locked.
