An 1887 Minton cabinet plate in the Aesthetic style, with a deep cobalt blue border richly gilded with a blue well centred on a gold reserve of kingfishers among bullrushes.

Description

The plate is a confident expression of the Aesthetic Movement - the design language that drew heavily on Japanese art and nature study, and which Minton embraced with particular skill during the 1880s. The border is a deep cobalt blue, more intense in person than the photographs suggest, with finely worked gilding running through it. The well is glazed in a softer, cooler blue, creating a deliberate tonal shift that draws the eye inward. At the centre, a reserved panel depicts kingfishers perched among bullrushes, rendered entirely in gold - a treatment characteristic of the period's fascination with Japanese decorative conventions.

To the reverse, the Mintons impressed mark is present alongside the date cipher for 1887, placing the piece firmly within the factory's Aesthetic period output. The date cipher system Minton used from 1842 onward allows pieces to be dated to the exact year of manufacture - a useful provenance detail for collectors.

Condition

Generally very good for age. Fine crazing consistent with the period. A couple of small surface scratches to the pale blue well and very minor gilt wear - neither detracts from display.
