Summary

A delightful and characterful Victorian rosewood fitted sewing box with extensive mother of pearl inlay to the exterior, c.1860. Standing on four bun feet with a working lock, a beautifully detailed ruched interior, and a lift-out fitted tray - a fine example of mid-Victorian decorative craftsmanship in good condition for its age.

Description

The exterior is richly decorated with mother of pearl inlay and stands on four bun feet, with a locking lid - the lock still functioning smoothly. Opening the box reveals a detailed ruched panel to the inside of the lid in mustard yellow, with a green leather surround that has been gilt blocked. A pull tab draws it forward to reveal a pouch area suitable for patterns or paperwork.

The lift-out top tray is fully fitted with various sections, small pull-outs for needles, and lidded divisions. Beneath the tray is an open area for larger items. A charming personal touch: the box comes with a small collection of original objects found inside, which will be included for the new owner as a pleasing connection to the piece's history. Dates to around 1860.

Condition

Good condition for period. Minor wear to the exterior; two sections of decorative beading are missing, visible in the images. Some interior wear as expected for age, though less than is typical for the period. There was likely a further lid to the top tray which is no longer present.
