Summary

A decorative late Victorian Albertina watch chain with a multi-strand rope design, heart fob, ornate central feature, T-bar and dog clip. Unmarked but tested as sterling silver, it may also be worn as a bracelet fitting a wrist of up to approximately 18cm.

Description

This late Victorian Albertina is formed from several fine twisted rope chains, creating a detailed multi-strand design while retaining the lighter proportions traditionally associated with Albertina chains. The chain is decorated with polished silver ball spacers and an ornate drum-shaped central feature worked with floral and scrolling detail. A twisted T-bar with polished ball terminals is fitted at one end, while the opposite end has a traditional dog clip.

Suspended from a separate rope chain section is a heart-shaped fob. The heart has dense scrolling decoration to either side of a plain central band, giving definition to its softly rounded form.

Albertinas were decorative counterparts to the heavier Albert watch chains, often worn by women with small watches, fobs and charms. Their elaborate chains and fittings also allow surviving examples to be adapted for modern wear - this example can be arranged as a bracelet for a wrist measuring up to approximately 18cm.

There are no visible silver marks; however, the piece has been tested and confirmed as sterling silver.

Condition

Generally good antique condition with normal age-related surface wear and minor marks. There is a small opening at the joined seam at the bottom point of the heart fob.
