Description

A mid Victorian brooch set with small turquoise cabochons across a compact domed face, the stones arranged in a close pave formation across the curved surface. The mount is silver with gold plating, and the overall form is characteristic of the mid Victorian period around 1870.

The reverse is plain, fitted with a standard period hinge and a simple hook catch. There are no maker's marks or hallmarks, which is normal for small decorative brooches of this type and period.

Turquoise was among the most popular stones in mid Victorian jewellery, used across a wide range of pieces from the modest to the elaborate. Its blue green colour was associated with friendship and good fortune, and the stone appears frequently in pieces from the 1860s and 1870s in both high quality and everyday jewellery.

Condition

Please read carefully before purchasing. Two of the turquoise cabochons are chipped, and one has an old replacement stone, all of which are visible in the detail images. There is also wear to the gold plating on the reverse. The brooch looks good in normal wear and the condition is fairly reflected in the price, but buyers should be aware of these points. The photographs show the piece larger than life size and accentuate the surface detail.
