A Victorian mahogany and crossbanded scent box with brass lock and key, housing two Yardley glass bottles for perfume and smelling salts.

Description

The box is crossbanded mahogany with a fitted brass lock and working key. Inside sit two glass bottles - one for smelling salts, one for lavender water - both by Yardley of London. Each bottle carries its original Yardley paper label and is moulded "Yardley London" to the base. The labels appear to date from the early 20th century, placing them some fifty years after the box itself, though the fit is remarkably good. The bottles still carry a perfume smell when opened.

Condition

The bottles are in good order with some slight chipping around the stoppers. The box is good overall, with fading to the interior lining. The lock and key function well and the wood is very good for the period.
