A late Victorian Wedgwood china plate with a cobalt blue and gilt border, hand painted to the centre with a snowy church scene beneath an evening sky.

Description

A hand painted china plate by Wedgwood, the border in cobalt blue with extensive gilt work and embossed gilt to the rim. To the underside it carries the Wedgwood Portland mark, dating it between 1878 and 1891, together with pattern number X1394. The central panel is hand painted with a snowy church scene - a stile in the foreground, the church beyond, and an evening sky above. The scene is unsigned, as is expected for the period; signatures were not common before the twentieth century. It would have formed part of a dessert service, though pieces of this quality were generally kept as cabinet display rather than put to use. Please note that at time of writing we have a number of similar matching plates and tazzas listed.

Condition

Very good for period with very little wear - just a few blemishes to the gilt. Please note the white marks on the rim in the first image are from the lighting.
