Description

A late Victorian hand painted china plate by Wedgwood, produced as part of a dessert service.

The border is cobalt blue with extensive gilt work and embossed gilt to the rim. The central panel is hand painted with a winding stream running through open grassland, framed by trees under an evening sky. The scene is unsigned, as expected for the period - signatures on English ceramic art were not common before the 20th century.

To the underside the plate carries the Wedgwood Portland mark, which dates production to between 1878 and 1891. The pattern number X1394 is also present.

Plates from dessert services of this type were generally kept for display rather than use, and this example has survived in correspondingly good order. At time of listing, a number of further matching plates and tazzas from the same service are available.

Condition

Very good condition for the period with very little wear. There are a few minor blemishes to the gilt. The white marks visible to the rim in the first image are from the lighting and are not present on the plate.
