Description

This is perhaps one of the most iconic of the Victorian moulded jugs, the Eglinton Tournament jug by William Ridgway & Sons Co.  It has finely detailed moulding of jousting knights and a band of fruiting vines with gothic arches around the rim.  The jug celebrates the Eglinton Tournament of 1839 which had huge notoriety in its time and was attended by the rich and famous including Louis Napoleon (later to become Emporer of France).  The tournament had mixed success and suffered from heavy rain (of course).  It did however inspire many artworks and products to cash in on the event including Ridgway's design here.

This example is in blue stoneware and had impressed marks to the base including the date of 1840.  The mark also betrays the notion that the pottery companies thought of these pieces as artworks and not just domestic products with the use of 'published'.  This jug also has two small holes to the rim, so it either originally had a pewter lid which was carefully removed, or was sold without the lid.  No moulded jug collection would be complete without this design.

Condition

Very good for period.  Rim holes suggestive it may originally have had a pewter lid.  Minor firing flaws including a small piece of white ceramic adhered near the rim.  Some rubbing around the belly band.
