Art Deco 9ct Rose Gold & Natural Aquamarine Bar Brooch - Oval Collet Set - c.1920s - C2994
Summary
An Art Deco 9ct rose gold bar brooch set with a natural oval facet cut aquamarine in a raised rub-over collet, the slender tapered bar with flared terminals marked 9ct, dating to the 1920s.
Description
The brooch is of slender bar form in 9ct rose gold, the bar gently curved with a tapered profile and flared terminals - a clean, linear construction that is characteristic of the Art Deco period. At the centre, a natural oval aquamarine measuring approximately 5.75mm by 4.5mm is set within a raised rub-over collet that lifts the stone clear of the bar, allowing light to enter from below and giving the pale blue stone a quiet luminosity against the warm rose gold.
The restraint of the design is deliberate. Art Deco jewellers working in the 1920s understood that a single well-chosen stone, properly set, needed nothing around it. The aquamarine here - with its cool, clear blue-green tone - provides exactly the contrast the rose gold requires: not competing with it, but making the warmth of the metal more apparent by sitting against it.
The reverse is fitted with a long pin and an open C-shaped clasp. A small loop is present for attaching a safety chain, though no chain is currently fitted. The brooch is marked 9ct to the reverse.
Aquamarine is the traditional birthstone for March.
Condition
Very good antique condition with light wear consistent with age. The aquamarine is secure in its collet and the pin fitting closes correctly.
