Description

A wonderfully unusual Art Deco wooden cigar case, made in burr walnut and dating to around the 1920s.

The case has a slim rectangular form with a flush cut hinge and warm figured burr walnut grain. It was likely made for slim cigars, popular during the early 20th century, though today it is best appreciated as a rare novelty object and collector’s piece.

The front is inset with a stylised panel showing a seated courting couple. When opened, the interior reveals the matching reverse view, transforming the innocent exterior image into an erotic hidden scene. The outer panel has faded over time, creating a colour difference between the exterior and interior images, but the effect remains clear and charming.

No maker’s details have been found. The hinge works well and the case closes neatly.

Erotic and risqué novelty pieces were produced in many forms during the Art Deco period, often intended as private amusements rather than overt display objects. Wooden examples are much less commonly encountered than silver or metal cigarette and cigar cases, making this a particularly distinctive survivor.

A characterful 1920s object: part cigar case, part optical joke, and part discreet adult novelty.

Condition

Exterior faded due to light exposure over the decades. There are some scratches, including some to the inset panel, but nothing which spoils the overall effect. The hinge mechanism is working well and the case closes nicely. Natural flaws in the wood as expected for burr walnut.
