Summary

An Art Deco period uranium glass bead necklace in vivid opaque yellow vaseline glass, graduating to a large central oval bead and fluorescing bright green under ultraviolet light. The necklace measures 44cm and is accompanied by approximately 27cm of matching spare beads, allowing scope for lengthening or restoration.

Description

A striking Art Deco period necklace made from graduated oval uranium glass beads in a rich opaque yellow. The beads are polished into smooth oval forms and graduate gradually towards the centre, where the largest bead measures approximately 19.5 x 14.5mm. The colour is consistent throughout - a warm, saturated yellow with a glossy surface that catches the light well.

Under ultraviolet light the glass fluoresces a bright green, as shown in the video provided with the listing. This characteristic glow is the defining feature of uranium glass and the reason collectors seek it out.

The necklace is fitted with a simple gold tone spring ring clasp and measures approximately 44cm in its current configuration. Also included is a separate run of matching spare beads measuring approximately 27cm in total, providing useful original material should the necklace ever need lengthening or restringing.

Uranium glass was widely used in decorative and costume jewellery during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Small quantities of uranium compounds were added to the glass mixture to produce the distinctive yellow and yellow green colours, with the characteristic fluorescence only becoming visible under ultraviolet light. The uranium content in glass of this type is low and the material is considered safe to handle and wear.

Condition

Good vintage condition overall with expected period wear. The beads remain bright and glossy. One smaller bead near the clasp has a chip extending from the threading hole. The necklace remains wearable, and the additional spare beads offer useful matching material if future restringing is desired.
