Description

A beautifully understated Chamberlain Worcester porcelain plate, decorated with shell studies in soft monochrome.

The plate is bat printed in en grisaille, with a central shell study surrounded by further shell designs spaced around the border. Each shell is set among fine seaweed or coral-like detail, giving the decoration a natural history style with a light, engraved quality.

The monochrome shell studies are framed by a gilt inner band and gilt rim, adding warmth without distracting from the delicate printed decoration. The result is a quiet, elegant plate with considerable period charm.

To the underside is a faint impressed Chamberlains Worcester 22 mark.

Bat printing was prized for its fine tonal detail and was well suited to natural history subjects such as shells, plants and classical scenes. This example has a particularly refined simplicity, making it an appealing piece for a collection of Worcester porcelain, early 19th century ceramics or shell-decorated objects.

Condition

Very good antique condition for period, with slight gilt wear and some minor scratches to the face.
