Charles Meigh Antique Julius Caesar & Boudicca Moulded Stoneware Jug c1839 (Code 2432)
A mid 19th century large moulded jug by Charles Meigh. The design is titled Julius Caesar and it has detailed scenics below oak leaves, acorns and branches. The first scene depicts Caesar landing in England battling whilst disembarking, thought to represent the first attempt in 55BC or possibly the return attempt the following year. The opposite side is Boudicca leading the Iceni revolt in 61AD.
The handle has decorative ivy forms and the body is in semi-gloss buff colour over the stoneware body. The base has a detailed clay mark identifying both the maker and the title of the jug. This jug was made in other sizes and colours and was the first moulded jug made by Charles Meigh being released in 1839, just 1 years after Queen Victorian was crowned.
Very good for period, some minor firing flaws to the surface with small tears in places (see images) - this being typical for the period.
