Chinese Antique Tea Caddy Black Lacquer & Gold with Decorative Lead Interior (Code 2320)
A 19th century Chinese black lacquer tea caddy with lead liner. It has elaborate gilt decoration in the traditional style and further panels of subtle detail in silver grey tone. The box has scalloped detail and a working lock with key.
The lid opens to reveal the interior edges also painted with gilt patterns. It has a large internal hinged lid chased with Chinese characters and a pattern border. This inner lid opens to reveal a plain lead lined interior.
A beautifully detailed example and scarce form with the internally decorated lid.
Much better than average for type and period. Some wear and loss of the gilt detail especially to the handling points as you would expect, and the silver toned panels are perhaps less vibrant and faded. Some minor losses around the edges with small chips and nibbles. Hinges and lock good. Interior also very good for period. See images for general exterior condition.
